High Side Gondola Conversion

CTT-1-Gondola

Rocky Mountain Railway converts existing rail cars to other uses. Starting in the winter of 2005, RMR proceeded to undertake the conversion of a D&RG High Side Gondola from a bulk freight configuration to a tourist passenger configuration. This project was undertaken to provide the Colorado Historical Society with a heavy car for end of train usage on the Georgetown Loop Railroad. This area chronicles the ensuing events.

The D&RG gondola 1156 owned by the Colorado Historical Society, without trucks, as delivered to the RMR facilities in Valmont, Colorado.

 

The conversion process is as follows:

  • Power wash the dust and dirt off

  • Assess and record the status of the car

  • Is it amenable to the conversion - Yes

  • Remove all extraneous accessories

  • Remove the top side planks added to the car by D&RG in 1926.

  • Refurbish the selected narrow gauge trucks, repack the wheel bearings.

  • Move the car body to the mechanical work area and set it on the refurbished trucks.

  • Remove brave valves and send to the brake contractor.

  • Install new brake shoes.

  • Install and adjust the brake rods.

  • Replace damaged side posts.

  • Straighten the car draw rods.

  • Straighten the queen posts.

  • Cut the end door.

  • Paint the exterior.

  • Paint the interior.

  • Install the new plywood floor covering.

  • Paint the floor.

  • Fit and install the steel door frame.

  • Fit and install the steel side wall caps.

  • Install wheel type hand brake.

  • Paint the metal work.

  • Fabricate the steel bench seat brackets.

  • Install the seat brackets with the bench seat planks on the side walls.

  • Thoroughly inspect the car
